Aalto Model 401 Armchair

Alvar Aalto designed the high-back model 401 armchair in 1933 for Artek. It is superbly comfortable to sit in and has stunning looks. The bent birch plywood construction of the chair’s frame is solid and sturdy, yet light to move around. As such it is representative of the functionalist movement. The chair was part of the interior decoration of Paimio Sanatorium, designed by Aalto, the construction of which also finished in 1933.

The model 401 armchair is still in production by Artek and sold by the Finnish Design Shop with a price tag at 2 564 €. Prices for vintage chairs are around 400 €.
