“Vino” chair by Yrjö Kukkapuro

The name of the chair “Vino”, is Finnish and roughly translates as oblique, crooked, or slanted. The Vino chair was designed in 1984 by Yrjö Kukkapuro, and produced by Avarte (previously Haimi). Kukkapuro designed other similar chairs that were commonly used in public spaces, such as the Cloud chair, which shares the same basic structure with Vino. It also features a similar arm rest design.

The chair’s feet are made of chrome-plated tubular steel, and the seat is made of bent plywood. The chairs were available in a variety of color combinations. The style is very distinctive for the 1980s. In other words, it’s a bit quirky and odd. It’s not extremely comfortable to sit in either. More than anything it’s a light, sturdy practical chair that is designed primarily for public spaces.

The Vino chair is no longer in production, but every now and then You can find them in online auctions. The prices start from around 150€ per chair.
